Poland hopes NATO will start shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine

Warsaw’s top diplomat hopes that NATO allies will eventually decide to shoot down Russian cruise missiles over Ukrainian territory, Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski said on Oct. 31.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski previously advocated for such a shift in NATO’s policy. According to Wronski, Sikorski has “repeatedly faced criticism within NATO” for his position.

“As we know, NATO countries and the organization itself have expressed negative opinions regarding this initiative, and there have been dissenting voices in the United States as well,” Ukrainian state news agency Ukrinform quoted Wronski.

“However, Minister Sikorski is hoping for a change in this position from the allies.”

On Oct. 13, Sikorski announced that a missile defense base in the village of Redzikowo, in northern Poland, would soon be operational. This base will become part of NATO’s integrated air and missile defense shield.

In late August, Sikorski stated that his country should intercept Russian missiles in Ukrainian airspace. Later, Wronski clarified that Sikorski was expressing a personal opinion on the matter.
